You could be breathing in other peoples dead skin ! YUM
Yup , its a fact about 50% of house dust is made up of dead skin cells and microbes from people and pets .
Who all has lived in your home besides you ?
Check out a great video from Veritasum to learn about dust and dead skin. (see link below )
Also you don't need much dust build up to slow the airflow and cause problems. Once you get a thin layer of dust coating the walls of your main ducting , its just a matter of time before it blows out the vents each time the furnace runs.
Bacteria wont typically live on clean metal surfaces but give it a layer of dust, a bit of humidity and some heat and now you could have the perfect petri dish living in your ducts.
Modern Furnaces are complex machines with Reheat Coils, a heat exchanger, Blower fan , motors and extremely sensitive control parts and sensors and none of these things like dust built up on them. Keeping the furnace clean is critical to prevent expensive breakdowns, extra high fuel bills and of course to keep air flowing through it.
Its also important to note : planned service contracts with your local HVAC company generally do not include cleaning the furnace, usually they just change out the filter.
Your air conditioning coils and reheat coils are exposed to a lot of debris day and night. They can get plugged up with dirt, lint, cooking oils, smoke, hair, dead skin, construction debris, drywall dust, sawdust, nails, kids’ toys, and food from the kitchen vents. You would be amazed at what you can find in an HVAC system.
The fact is, all of these things will slow down your airflow and cause your furnace to run longer and harder, forcing your bills to go up. New Modern Furnaces with coils need cleaning more often, usually every 2- 5 years depending on your home.
